Imtiaz Ali has come out with a short film titled Bruno and Juliet narrating the love story of two dogs. Ali has collaborated with Royal Stag Barrel Select Large Short films for a three-movie association, and Bruno and Juliet is the first film to come out of that deal.

This 10 minute short film is presented by Ali and is written and directed by Khawar Jamsheed.

It was released on their YouTube channel Large Short Films on Thursday. “Bruno and Juliet is a conventional love story of characters that are unconventional lovers for cinema — Dogs. The film explores the basic need of two lovers to unite, only in this film the lovers are dogs,” Ali said in a statement to IANS.

The short film depicts an unusual friendship and an unspoken love between two dogs, Bruno and Juliet. “Bruno and Juliet is very special to me. It is about an unlikely friendship between two unlikely protagonists. I used to observe dogs in my neighbourhood closely and found their friendship very fascinating. So, I picked up my camera and started following the dogs filming them for 22 days,” said Jamsheed according to the same IANS report.

The short film depicts the love story between a St. Bernard called Bruno and a white stray dog called Juliet. The background score of the film makes it all the more pleasant to watch, although there are a few intense scenes that keep the viewer hooked.

The short film can be seen as a social commentary on inter-caste and inter-class relationships (portrayed through a narrative wherein furry animals and not humans are the protagonists). Bruno’s owner tries his hardest to separate the two dogs however in the end love and friendship supersedes everything.

A heartwarming tale with a cinematic twist that finally results in a happy ending, this short film gives us one of Bollywood’s most talented and reputed directors, coupled with doggo’s. And if that’s not a winning combination, then we don’t know what is.

If the other two short films in the three-part deal are anything like Bruno and Juliet, the audience is in for a treat!
