Khujli, directed by Sonam Nair, features Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta as a middle-aged couple trying to spice up their sex life in an awkward and adorable manner.

The movie opens with the sounds of heavy breathing, moans and a bed creaking. “Zara zor se karna,” says a man, to which a woman replies with, “Kar toh rahi hu! Aur kitna zor se karu?”

The camera shifts to a shot of a couple sitting on the bed. The husband, played by Jackie Shroff, is pleading with his wife, played by Neena Gupta, to scratch him harder using a kitchen instrument. The look of satisfaction on Shroff’s face when he scratches himself is hilarious.

The backdrop of the story is that of a typical middle class household in India — the husband works, the wife takes care of the household, they’re frustrated because of their twenty-year-old son and are are together taking care of the wife’s ailing mother.

The tone of the film becomes intense when Shroff finds a pair of handcuffs in his son’s room, and he instantly blames Gupta’s laad-pyaar for it. He is fuming, but his anger changes to disbelief when he sees that Gupta is amused by the handcuffs. She surprises him with her knowledge of BDSM, her interest in Fifty Shades of Grey and the sexpert column in the newspaper. He is left at a loss for words.

The best part about this short film is the acting. Shroff is brilliant as a husband completely unaware of his wife’s interest in sex, and Gupta is the perfect mix of a wife and a tease. The way she says, “Aap toh, khair chhodo,” implying that she has given up on her husband’s interest in sex, is both natural and effortless.

It is endearing to watch the couple prepare and rehearse foreplay; a sign that they perhaps have not had sex since their son was born. Whether you are a twenty-something or over the age of forty, you will be able to relate to the awkward situations that crop up when they try role play and blindfolding.

The shot of the old grandmother smiling upon hearing the sounds from the couple’s bedroom lends a nice humourous touch to the end of the film.
