Roke Na Ruke Naina: Badrinath Ki Dulhania song brings in some much-needed depth

After watching the fun and romantic sides of Badrinath and Vaidehi, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt’s characters in Shashank Khaitan’s upcoming romantic comedy Badrinath Ki Dulhania, we get to see the low points of their relationship in the new song of the film, ‘Roke Na Ruke Naina’.

As beautifully worded the title of the song is, the music also makes a mark in spite of bearing no novelty. Both Kumaar’s lyrics and Amaal Malik’s music play their bit in making what this song essentially is - a situational sequence. The visuals explore the sour patches of their relationship in the three cities the film is set in - Kota, Jhansi and Singapore.

Arijit Singh’s vocals lends gravitas to the track, which otherwise would have been another run-of-the-mill song. Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt look adorable even while they are shouting at each other.

While Bhatt maintains a rather restrained demeanour throughout the song, Dhawan has his fair share of outbursts. It was refreshing to watch a lead male actor cry his eyes out in the pre-climax scene of Khaitan’s directorial debut Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Dhawan carries forward this soft side and incorporates it in his new character in the sequel.

Overall, this song scores on the dire need to touch upon the flip side of a deeply involved relationship. Whatever we have seen of the film so far has been all hunky dory, barring a few shots in the trailer of the film. This song explores those few parts elaborately, thus adding a much-needed new dimension to the film that had hitherto been all about colours, dance and beautiful people.
