Koffee with Karan Season 5: Ten moments that this season will be remembered for

With the distribution of the Koffee Awards in the final episode, Karan Johar’s chat show Koffee with Karan Season 5 came to an end. While it had its fair share of criticism — the show was accused of being a surface skimmer or a promotional vehicle for upcoming films — season 5 also boasted of a few memorable moments involving our favourite celebrities.

Shah Rukh Khan narrating a nursery rhyme in the Arnab Goswami style

Remember Shah Rukh’s appearance on The Viral Fever’s Barely Speaking with Arnub? It was only a fraction of how hilarious his mimicry of the news anchor on Koffee with Karan. The best part? He wasn’t breaking any news that the nation wanted to know. He was just reading the classic nursery rhyme, ‘Marry Had A Little Lamb’ in signature Arnab style.

Akshay Kumar dedicates ‘Strangers In The Night’ to wife Twinkle Khanna

Kumar surprise Khanna in her debut appearance on the show when he dedicated a romantic song to her. It was not just any other romantic song but a Frank Sinatra classic that shaped the formative years of their relationship.

Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor conversing in an alien language

Having known each other since their childhood, the camaraderie between Dhawan and Arjun was unparalleled on the entire season. It was reflected in not only the embarrassing anecdotes they shared of each other but also in the game Johar played with them. He asked them to converse in a language of their own. It was almost telepathic how the two actors exchanged words in a self-invented language and managed to make sense, to each other of course.

Ranbir Kapoor wishing babies to Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone

It was a Koffee coup in its own right when Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh shared the couch. Apart from being contemporaries, they also shared history in Deepika, Ranbir’s ex and Ranveer’s current girlfriend. When Johar asked Ranbir whether it affects his equation with Ranveer, Ranbir pointed out that it has been years since they broke up. Ranveer was quite content with Ranbir’s answer until Ranbir added, “and I hope they go on to make beautiful babies.” Awkward alert!

Katrina Kaif spells out the history behind Varun Dhawan’s ‘I Hate Katrina Kaif’ club

Katrina Kaif felt like a breath of fresh air on this season. That is exactly why she was adjudged as the Best Female Performance by the Koffee Awards jury. She was hilarious and exposed a side of her personality that remained concealed behind her glamorous avatar. She recalled how Varun Dhawan was admonished by her former beau, and his mentor, Salman Khan for hitting on her. Consequently, he formed an ‘I Hate Katrina Kaif’ club and also roped in Arjun Kapoor.

Sohail Khan’s ‘1-0-0’ Comment

The 100th episode of Koffee with Karan hosted the three Khan brothers - Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail. They were at their candid best and also indulged in self-deprecating humour. When Salman said that the marriages of his younger brothers holds his faith in the institution intact, Arbaaz retorted by reminding that he is not married anymore, referring to his divorce with Malaika Arora. Similarly, Sohail explained how poetic it was that they had been invited for the 100th episode as Salman is the ‘1’ in the ‘100’ while Arbaaz and Sohail represent the two zeroes.

Varun Dhawan mimics Hrithik Roshan… almost

Though he could have easily chosen the ‘Ek Pal Ka Jeena’ hook step to save himself from all the embarrassment, Dhawan decided to take the tougher route to make Alia Bhatt guess Hrithik Roshan’s name. He kept repeating ‘wo iss chehre ko pehchante hain’, the famous line from Hrithik’s debut film Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai but failed to get the diction right every time until he gave up.

Kangana Ranaut terms Karan Johar as ‘flag-bearer of nepotism’

This remains the most popular talking point of the entire season. Kangana Ranaut, fresh from an ugly public battle with Hrithik Roshan, picked up another fight on the show when she referred to Karan Johar as the ‘flag-bearer of nepotism’ and the ‘movie mafia’ on his own show. Stumped by her allegation, Johar maintained a dignified response only to lash out at her in a later interview.

Kareena Kapoor Khan lauding Priyanka Chopra’s dedication

Kareena was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award on the show for her appearance in every season of the show. When she appeared in Season 3 alongside her beau Saif Ali Khan, she asked her contemporary Priyanka Chopra the reason behind flaunting a Western accent. The two have rarely been on good terms and that is why it was refreshing to see her appreciate Priyanka on this season. She admitted that she does not have what it takes to make big in Hollywood like Priyanka did and also said that she makes India proud on every global platform.

Malaika Arora announcing the Khans’ as the Best Episode

It was the third time that Malaika Arora judged the Koffee Awards. Her unbiased approach towards the same probably explains why. After getting separated from Arbaaz just months ago, Malaika had only nice things to say about the Khans. She referred to them as ‘sons of the soil’ and also rooted for their episode to be named the Best Episode, despite her recent estrangement from Arbaaz after a long spell of 17 years.
