Remember the scene from Shashank Khaitan’s romantic comedy Badrinath Ki Dulhania in which Aparshakti Khurana’s character is ‘performing’ a bhajan, which is a rehash of a popular Hindi film song. That scene essentially captured how even the clergy is adapting to change in order to market their bhajans properly.
A similar situation is seen in the song, ‘Jai Maa’ from Ajay K Pannalal’s upcoming romantic comedy Behen Hogi Teri. It is a rehash of the song ‘Kaala Chashma’ from Nitya Mehra’s romantic comedy Baar Baar Dekho from last year, which itself is a rehash of an old popular Punjabi number.
However, ‘Jai Maa’ qualifies as a fresh song because of the devotional tweak that it adds to its lyrics and treatment. Though the music is almost identical to the original, the lyrics are not about appeasing the opposite gender but appeasing the almighty, Durga mata in particular.
Music composer Jaidev Kumar has little to do as the song is a carbon copy of the original, in terms of music arrangement and composition. The vocalists, Sahil Solanki and Jyotica Tangri sing with conviction as they manage to catch the nuances of the devotional tweak that the priests incorporate in their rehashes of Hindi film songs.
The song encapsulates the festive and indulgent atmosphere of a pandal effectively. Rajkummar Rao, though not on spot with his lip sync, is a winner in the close-up shots. Shruti Haasan is at her comical best as she pays a filmy tribute to Durga mata with a straight face masking uncontrollable laughter directed at the rather bizarre situation.
Behen Hogi Teri stars Rao, Haasan, Ranjeet, Darshan Jariawala, Ninad Kamat, Gulshan Grover, Kamlesh Gill and Gautam Gulati. It is co-produced by Tony D’Souza, Amul Vikas Mohan and Nitin Upadhyaya. It is slated to release on 26 May.
