Humsafar: Badrinath Ki Dulhania song has Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan in a poetic exchange

Dharma Productions, the producers of Shashank Khaitan’s upcoming romantic comedy Badrinath Ki Dulhania, have released another song, ‘Humsafar’ from the album, which they have dubbed as the ’love anthem of 2017’, juxtaposing it against ‘Samjhawan’ from the 2013 prequel, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.

The song starts off on quite a lyrical note with the lead actors Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in a poetic exchange. But the lyrics that follow are quite average. Now, the cardinal rule is that if the words are easy on the ears, the music and the vocals need to boast of a quirky treatment. However, that does not happen as its melody is simplistic, as opposed to ‘Samjhawan’ which became an instant hit because of its heartwarming melody.

The best part of ‘Humsafar’, besides the much-talked about chemistry between Dhawan and Bhatt, is its vocals by Akhil Sachdeva who is also the man behind the music and the words. His voice initially sounds like Atif Aslam but adopts a hoarse structure once he nails the high notes. That is where the distinction between a great and a good song lies. While ‘Samjhawan’ ironed out all its imperfections, ‘Humsafar’ leans largely on the success of its predecessor.

Mansheel Gujral lends a good helping hand by crooning a few lines in the middle of the song. Her soulful rendition is a fresh departure from Sachdeva’s vocals which seem to imitate established singers like Aslam and Arijit Singh, probably since Aslam is going to stay away from Hindi cinema till the tensions between India and Pakistan ease out.

The visuals are well-directed and distract the viewers from the rather underwhelming music. Overall, Dharma dig the grave of its song by comparing it to ‘Samjhawan’ to build up momentum towards its release.
