Best moments from 62nd Filmfare Awards: From Alia Bhatt's throwback to SRK-Salman's banter

The 62nd Jio Filmfare Awards saw a host of Bollywood star under one roof. While some performed their hearts out, a few took the black lady home. But beyond the awards, the function marked the rare time when majority of the industry congregate to celebrate the legacy of Hindi cinema, with special focus on the year gone by.

Like every year, the Filmfare Awards had its fair share of memorable moments this year as well. The highlight of the night was when Filmfare presented the Lifetime Achievemnt award to veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha. Filmmaker Subhash Ghai introduced the awardee by praising his confidence back when they were classmates in the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

Shatrughan’s daughter and actor Sonakhshi Sinha accompanied Amitabh Bachchan to the stage as they presented the award to her father. Bachchan, who has nurtured his friendship with Shatughan since Raj Khosla’s 1980 film Dostana, lauded his multiple stints - as a negative character, a lead actor, a politician and now a theatre artiste. Shatrughan, in his signature lyrical style, claimed that the award is his first and it was long time due.

In a memorable performance, Alia Bhatt paid tribute to five leading ladies of Hindi cinema since the 1980s by dancing on their most popular numbers. She kicked off by dancing on Kareena Kapoor’s ‘Yeh Ishq Haai’ from Imtiaz Ali’s 2007 romantic comedy Jab We Met. Then, she shook a leg on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s ‘Neembuda’ from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 1999 romantic drama Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

With Sridevi pepping her up from the front row, Bhatt danced on ‘Naa Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai’ from Pankaj Parashar’s 1989 comedy Chaalbaaz. Sridevi’s niece Sonam Kapoor was also seen enjoying the performance thoroughly. Bhatt followed it by dancing on Sridevi’s contemporary Madhuri Dixit’s song.

She wrapped her act up by dancing on Karisma Kapoor’s ‘Le Gayi Le Gayi’ from Yash Chopra’s 1997 musical Dil Toh Pagal Hai, followed by her own song, ‘Kar Gayi Chul’ from Shakun Batra’s 2016 family drama Kapoor and Sons. It was an eventful night for the actor as she went on to win the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for Abhishek Kapoor’s Udta Punjab, which was presented by none other than Sridevi.

Another yesteryear actor, Rekha, who sat besides Sridevi was caught off guard by the host Kapil Sharma. The comedian asked her to mimic her Khoon Bhari Maang co-star Shatrughan Sinha and the senior actor obliged sportingly.

Sharma also set his eyes on Rishi Kapoor and asked him to dedicate a song to his wife Neetu Kapoor. When Rishi crooned ‘Khullam Khulla’, Sharma objected by claiming that Rishi was contradicting himself as he is known for his more popular song, ‘Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Band Ho’. To this, Rishi replied that he was young and shy back when he did his father Raj Kapoor’s 1973 teenage romance Bobby.  He then narrated a line from yet another popular song of the actor from Subhash Ghai’s 1980 revenge drama Karz - ‘Ek Haseena Thi, Ek Deewana Tha’.

Later in the night, Rishi managed to get the upper hand over his Kapoor and Sons co-stars Rajat Kapoor and Fawad Khan when he won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He hugged Rajat before heading to the stage to receive his award. He dedicated his award to the entire onscreen ‘Kapoor family’ and his director Batra, to whom he confessed he gave a tough time, owing to his tantrums.

Shabana Azmi won the Best Actress in a Supporting Role award for Ram Madhvani’s Neerja. After her acceptance speech, Sharma invited her husband and lyricist Javed Akhtar to the stage and asked him to dedicate a romantic poem to her.

Azmi then pointed out that Akhtar is not romantic at all, to which Sharma requested his co-host Shah Rukh Khan to demonstrate a romantic dance number to the former filmmaker. Shah Rukh began to dance with Azmi on ‘Janam Janam’ from Rohit Shetty’s 2015 family drama Dilwale, before Akhtar pulled his wife away in good humour and returned to their seats.

Shah Rukh started the award function by pointing out that it was after 18 years that all three Khans were nominated in the Best Actor category. Later, when Salman Khan entered the venue, Shah Rukh engaged in a friendly banter with him from the stage and also invited to talk to him on Jio Chat.

In another memorable performance, Tiger Shroff shook a leg on some of his own numbers as well as those of his dance inspirations. He paid a tribute to the Hollywood legend Michael Jackson by performing a shadow dance in MJ style on his romantic song ‘Sab Tera’ from Sabbir Khan’s 2016 action entertainer Baaghi.

He also performed on the title song of Dhoom 2 as a tribute to Hrithik Roshan. He wrapped up by performing the famous flute act from Subhash Ghai’s 1983 action film Hero, before his father Jackie Shroff joined him on the stage to replicate the act that shot him to instant fame three decades ago.
