Shashank Khaitan’s long-awaited romantic comedy Badrinath Ki Dulhania is on the verge of its release. This movie transports the fans back to when its prequel Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was released three years ago.

As film critic Rajeev Masand says, in his interview with the lead pair Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, most of the people had little expectation from the film as the trailer only skimmed the surface while the audience assumed that it is a reflection of how the film is going to be.

However, like Masand, a large number of fans were surprised by the film, owing to its unique tone, narrative and characters. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania became a blockbuster as it had the edge of surprising the audience in an era when the trailer tells the entire story. However, Badrinath Ki Dulhania is the second installment of the franchise so it ceases to have that advantage.

In the interview to Masand, Varun says in the defecse of the film that his character will come across as a surprise. He hinted that Badrinath is his most content-oriented role since Badlapur. His last two films, Rohit Shetty’s 2015 family drama Dilwale, and his elder brother Rohit Dhawan’s 2016 action comedy Dishoom, had him in light, comical roles. On the other hand, Bhatt’s last three films, Shakun Batra’s Kapoor & Sons, Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab and Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi, were content-oriented.

Since the fans expect a similar conflicted performance from Bhatt in Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Varun’s performance will come as a pleasant surprise to them. However, Bhatt stopped him for divulging any more details in the interview about the ‘surprise’ in the film.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania is produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. It also stars Gauhar Khan, Mohit Marwah, Aparshakti Khurana and Girish Karnad. It is slated to release on 10 March.
