Restaurant discovery platform Zomato has a new restaurant quality index that helps you look for apartments in neighbourhood with good dining options.

Termed as the Foodie Index, it helps users know about the quality of restaurants in a particular area. The Foodie Index is available to developers globally as an API which they can integrate with their existing rental and travel platforms.

So far real estate platform CommonFloor has made the Foodie Index available across India on its Locality Map section to help users identify neighbourhoods for dining out, while travel planning portal TripHobo, available in 500 cities globally, uses Zomato’s API to offer dining suggestions based on users’ itineraries, but does not display the Foodie Index.

“Zomato’s Foodie Index has the same intent and vision as we do of simplifying property decisions. The index provides information beyond just the nearby restaurants and lets a user know how a location fares when it comes to the quality and variety of restaurants in an area. This will be extremely beneficial for seekers of rentals and paying guests, and for people who like to compare neighbourhoods based on the restaurant options when deciding where to stay," said Lalit Mangal, Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer, CommonFloor.

Commonfloor rival Housing.com already has a lifestyle rating index which also factors in local eateries.

How it works: Building on Zomato’s exhaustive restaurant data, the Foodie Index uses in-depth local restaurant information and user-generated content to calculate a score that indicates the quality of restaurants in a particular area.So now you can search for homes or hotels with great dining experiences just a short walk away.

This Foodie Index, starting today, will be available to developers for free, as an API, so as to integrate these scores within their app.

“Users will now be able to zero in on apartments and hotels in neighbourhoods where they can enjoy the best dining experiences a city has to offer. With the Foodie Index API, we’re making Zomato’s rich content easily accessible and restaurant discovery incredibly easy," said Satyajeet Singh, VP Products & Marketing, Zomato.

In May, Zomato added online ordering to its suite of foodie-related services, and also partnered with Uber to take hungry users straight to restaurants from its app. The company has also expanded its offering to include in-app cashless payments, table reservations, and a point-of-sale system, creating cutting-edge technology to connect restaurant businesses and customers in ways that will revolutionise the restaurant industry.
