Décor Extraordinaire - Jalsa

Exclusivity and grandeur are two things modern luxury homes claim to guarantee. However, only a select few are able to achieve the royal experience along with some privacy in their cherished nests.

One of the pivotal names in this context is that of the prolific, famous and most admired superstar among all ages, our very own Shahenshah of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan. The strong-willed, towering and reflective personality of Big B, as he is commonly known among his fans, is also reiterated in his extravagant, classy homes in and around Mumbai’s posh Juhu area.

It is nothing less than a fairytale-like scenario for the Bachchan family where they have five bungalows nestled in the prime Juhu –Ville Parle development (JVPD) area. Janak, Jalsa and Prateeksha owned by the family are all in walking distances of each other.

Their present home, Jalsa sprawls across a whopping 10, 125 square feet and is a treasured gift by director Ramesh Sippy to Amitabh on his epic performance in the movie, Satte Pe Satta (1982). Registered in the name of Jaya Bachchan, this two-storied bungalow has been a cherished spot among tourists and locals for the last 30 years. Every Sunday, people cram up around the bungalow for just one glimpse of the superstar.

Marked by an imposing spiral staircase, an ornate and lush green lawn in the backyard, Jalsa, worth 50 crores, is one mansion that is reflective of its owners in every way and befits the Bachchan family’s commanding and socially-active personas. Apparently, the lawn is the ultimate relaxation zone for the iconic superstar, who likes to spend some lone time in the midst of nature. This, it seems is the soothing factor for Big B when he has a busy, tiring day and also reflects on the fact that he loves to have greenery around.

The backdrop of the staircase is beautifully decorated with moments captured in the family at different points. A library neatly organized with books adorning its shelves is another feature that accentuates the look around this beautiful stairway.

A landmark for Mumbai’s identity, the star-studded Jalsa is also one of the most secured, heavily guarded and fenced houses in the city, given that it is the most commonly visited area in the ‘city of dreams.’ Well, Big B has certainly fulfilled his dreams while living in his dream home in this dreamland, Mumbai!

The interiors of the house speak volumes on elegance, class and style that the family represents. With its single shades of beige and brown, both in the interiors and exteriors, the house is rich in opulence and grandeur. The sea-facing bungalow nestled at a walking distance from Juhu Beach is surrounded by privy trees to offer some privacy to its owners from prying eyes. White rainproof sheets covering some portions of the house also add to one unique feature and provide some exclusivity and seclusion from the otherwise glitzy, glamorous lives that marks the Bachchan family.

The Right Mixing of Colours and Furnishing Patterns

With brightly printed carpets, stylish furnishings, colour-coordinated curtains and beautiful lightings and lamps, all the rooms in Jalsa scream happiness, luxury and sumptuousness to the core. The rugs, curtains and brown and beige-coloured walls with glass blend in together to give the ultimate sense of fashion and style. Even the furniture accessories are in tandem with the wall colours and darker tone of curtains and paintings on the walls. This pattern of colour coordination is common in all the rooms inside Jalsa, a place where exclusivity meets grandeur and style, even in the brightly lit spaces around the house.

Another captivating feature is the intricate patterns on the fancy lamps and cushions in the classy residential abode of the Bachchans. It is said that Anurag Kashyap was so floored with the interiors of this house that he shot a part of Bombay Talkies inside the premises!

However, with the kind of wealth and grandeur the Bachchans exhibit, having different buildings for different uses is rightly expected.

Why one when you can have three for different reasons?

Amitabh temple

Prateeksha had been the old residence for the family where Senior Bachchan lived with his parents for a long duration of his life. This property apparently has a lot of emotional connect with the icon and has been kept intact as a memory of his parents. This abode houses the famous temple made of white marble, a place visited daily by Big B as he prays to the deities. Reportedly, the temple consists of the idols of all deities in the Hindu mythology. Followed as a practice in the family, each member folds his hands in gratitude to the deities before leaving home. Well, Big B has certainly made his homes a ‘divine abode’ exuding peace, beauty and harmony.

Janak, on the other hand, houses the office and personal gym of Big B, adjoined to Jalsa.

Adding to the exclusivity and safety, the Bachchans have bought another huge bungalow with a plot area of 750 square yards just behind Jalsa. The 50-crore worth building consists of approximately 8000 square feet living space and will offer a secluded entry to Jalsa, that earlier opened up to the busy VL Mehta Road, mostly swarmed with fans. The family reportedly will not annex this new bungalow to Jalsa as yet, letting them have a vast open space in their backyard.

Jalsa, Prateeksha and Janak all sport the quality of magnificence and glory, true to the enigma that Senior Bachchan’s presence exudes, representing a royal life amid a royal décor.

Each and every work of art and creative piece has been chosen and placed in Jalsa so as to inspire awe and wonder. If the family would have picked on safe options, they would have never achieved this décor extraordinaire. If Jalsa can stand out in its décor with the apt designing and beautiful aesthetics, so can your home, as Asian Paints Royale experts believe. Jazz up your home with curated pieces from different parts of the world and up the décor ante with detailed styling such as colourful prints, beautiful carvings on vases, lamps and other home accessories.

Blending subtlety with drama

Did you know that by adding a spice of colour to one of your walls, you could achieve not only a great looking home but also positive energy and cheerful mood? The experts say that coordinating the colour on the walls with other accessories such as curtains, cushions, table runners or with the bright hues on another wall proves whether your home décor has hit the right spot. Each colour has a different meaning and inspires varied psychologies. “A bright red goes beautifully with an understated nude,” say the experts. They also believe that “balancing a bright hue with a subtle one adds in the drama!”
