Wagg's injury dents Glamorgan's ambitions

David Lloyd fell one short of a century as Glamorgan built a first innings lead of 68 over Gloucestershire on the second day of the Specsavers County Championship match in Bristol.

Lloyd, the 24-year-old batsman, looked set to reach three figures for the second time this season when caught at point for 99 off a full-length ball from Craig Miles.

Lloyd's excellent innings helped Glamorgan to 330 in reply to Gloucestershire's 262 and it might have been a lot more had Graham Wagg not been forced to retire hurt on 55, having been struck on the left arm by a delivery from Miles.

By the close Gloucestershire had made 60 for 1 in their second innings, Chris Dent having fallen for three to a fine diving slip catch by Aneurin Donald off Harry Podmore, and trailed by just eight runs.

Wagg was taken to hospital for an x-ray on his injury. Nothing more than bad bruising showed up and he may yet play a further part in the contest.

Glamorgan had gifted their opponents early wickets after resuming on 82 for 1 in excellent batting conditions.

Jacques Rudolph was run out for 40 by Cameron Bancroft's direct hit from midwicket after a mix-up over a single with Will Bragg, 15 runs having been added. Bragg reached a 96-ball half-century and had moved on to 70 before aiming a pull shot at Josh Shaw and edging a leg-side catch to wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick.

Donald, on 7, advanced down the track to left-arm spinner Graeme van Buuren without getting to the pitch of the ball and was comfortably stumped by Roderick to make it 150 for 4.

It was South African van Buuren's first wicket for Gloucestershire on debut and at lunch Glamorgan were 166 for 4, trailing by 96. After the interval Chris Cooke, on 30, miscued a pull shot off Miles and was caught at deep backward square by George Hankins to make it 167 for 5.

From there Lloyd and Wagg produced the best batting of the day, putting together a stand of 103 before the latter's injury.

Wagg was first to his half-century, off 79 balls, with 7 fours, and Lloyd soon followed, having faced 92 deliveries and also collected seven boundaries.

Neither gave a chance, but Wagg's departure signalled a swing in fortunes as Shaw produced a good delivery to have Andrew Salter caught behind second ball.

It was 294 for 6 at tea, with Lloyd on 79 and Glamorgan leading by 32. Their cause was aided by a poor over of short balls from Shaw, which saw Lloyd advance with four fours.

He hadn't given a chance when falling eight short of the career-best 107 he made against Kent at Canterbury earlier this month.
