Kieswetter suffers broken nose and cheek bone

Craig Kieswetter, the Somerset wicketkeeper, has been diagnosed with a broken nose and fractured cheek bone following a blow from a bouncer during the opening day of the Championship match against Northamptonshire.

Kieswetter, who has played 46 ODIs and 25 T20s for England, was pinned in the face by a short delivery from the left-armer David Willey, which squeezed between his grille and visor, and immediately went to his knees in the batting crease as blood spilled from a cut under his eye. He was treated on the pitch for a short period before being helped to the dressing room and went to hospital for tests.

Andy Nash, the Somerset chairman, tweeted on Saturday evening that Kieswetter had suffered "serious but non-career threatening injuries" and the club issued an update on Sunday morning.

"Craig has spent time at the local hospital and has undergone all the necessary tests and x-rays needed," a statement said. "The latest results have shown a broken nose and a fractured cheek bone, which over the coming days will receive further attention by the necessary specialists."

Somerset's director of cricket, Dave Nosworthy, said: "Craig is in very safe and capable hands at this time. These freak cricketing accidents happen from time to time and I am confident with the right care that he will come through this setback. Naturally Craig will no longer take part in this match, and I am thus sure that you will all join in - in wishing Craig a speedy recovery."

Kieswetter also took to Twitter to show he was in a good spirits despite the nasty injury. "I took keeping your 'eye on the ball' to a completely new level," he posted.
