However, during his first meet with Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, at a joint appearance at the White House, despite repeated requests by the media, Trump simply refused to shake her hand, at one point Merkel even tuned to him and said, "They want to have a handshake," only to get the royal ignore.
He later told the media, "Make sure to send a good picture back to Germany."
People went wild on social media, some finding it hilarious, others suffering from second-hand embarrassment on Merkel's behest, tweeting:

Trump deliberately snubs Merkel, refusing handshake. Alienating allies, confirming that the US is now owned/controlled by Putin. #Russiagate

Watching trump ignore Angela Merkel's handshake offer gives me that sick mixed feeling of embarrassment and dread in my stomach.

#Trump denying Chancellor #Merkel the handshake shows that his personality is smaller than his hands. #trumpmerkel

You can't blame Trump for not shaking hands with Angela Merkel. He's terrified of germs. Oh... and women who are smarter than him #handshake

America is a disgrace. Donald Trump can't even give Angela Merkel a handshake during their first meeting because he's too much of a baby.

Now that's petty!
However, the leaders did eventually shake hands later in the day.
