US President Donald Trump's handshakes with world leaders has hit headlines on several occasions. From Japan's Shinzo Abe to Canada's Justin Trudeau, none have been spared the unusual handshake by Trump.

However, during his first meet with Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, at a joint appearance at the White House, despite repeated requests by the media, Trump simply refused to shake her hand, at one point Merkel even tuned to him and said, "They want to have a handshake," only to get the royal ignore.

He later told the media, "Make sure to send a good picture back to Germany."

People went wild on social media, some finding it hilarious, others suffering from second-hand embarrassment on Merkel's behest, tweeting:

Now that's petty!

However, the leaders did eventually shake hands later in the day.
