Yellowstone's famous 'Scarface' grizzly killed

Scarface, a 25 year old grizzly bear who was frequently photographed and observed has been fatally shot.  The famous bear was found with a gun shot wound outside the Yellowstone National Park. In the 25 years of his life the grizzly had become iconic to the park. 
 
In a news statement released in April 2016 the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks department announced his death. However the shooting is said to have happened 5 months before in November 2015. 
 
Scarface's death is a huge blow to the endangered species protection effort in the United States. And because grizzlies are a protected species his death is being investigated.

  • He often allowed humans to come in close proximity to him.
  • This made him a popular subject for photographers.
  • His scar marks made him easy to recognise.
  • His maximum recorded weight was 600 pounds.
  • He was 338 pounds when last documented in 2015. 
​Scarface came to be known by the name owing to diagonal gash wounds on his face. He was formally labeled as Number 211.
 
According to a Washington Post report, Scientists had captured him 17 times to keep a track of his health and movements.
