Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, battered in his country after the recent protests by Imran Khan and Tahir-ul-Qadri, took the Kashmir issue to the stage of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday. His primary target was India, presumably to appear tough to the domestic constituency where jingoism against India seems to be the flavour of the season.

Here are the top 5 things that Nawaz Sharif said in his speech:

1. Raking up the issue of plebiscite in Kashmir:

Sharif again raked up Kashmir, saying that the core issue needs to be resolved. Voicing his support for the right of self determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, he said that more than six decades ago, the UN had passed resolutions to hold a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir which hasn't been fulfilled.

2. Accusations against India:

Sharif provoked by saying that, "Many generations of Kashmiris have lived their lives under occupation, accompanied by violence and abuse of their fundamental rights. Kashmiri women, in particular, have undergone immense suffering and humiliation".

3. Unilaterally blaming India for cancelation of talks

Nawaz Sharif said that Pakistan and the world community were upset at the calling off of foreign secretary level talks between the two countries. He said that talks are the only way forward to resolve all problems.

4. "Pakistan is a victim of terror"

According to Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan is a victim of terror and more than 50,000 people have lost their lives in more than a decade. He said that terrorism has been "planted" in the country's soil. "We condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. We are fighting terrorism planted on Pakistan's soil. Our valiant soldiers are laying down their lives to take out terrorists and tear down their evil networks," he said.
