Pakistan on Tuesday hanged eleven prisoners convicted for murder in various jails across the country, taking the total number of those executed following the lifting of the country's self-imposed moratorium on the death penalty last year to over 120.

Ten executions took place in several cities of Punjab province while one convict was hanged at Mach jail in Balochistan province. Two prisoners were hanged in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail for committing murder. A man convicted for killing a person in 1998 was hanged along with a convict named Sher Ali who had murdered a person in 2001.

In Central Jail Faisalabad, another two convicts were executed. Iftikhar Ahmed killed three people, including two brothers, as a result of firing over an argument in 2001 while convict Asif Zeb had killed a person in 1998.

In Central Jail Mach, convict Ibrahim was hanged after being convicted of murdering a person in 2003. Pakistan resumed hangings after the Pakistani Taliban attack on an army school in December that killed 150 people, mostly children. So far, 123 people have been executed as Pakistan has persisted with its policy of implementing capital punishment despite criticism by rights groups.
