Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Bimalendra Nidhi on Sunday announced his resignation from the post as a mark of resentment over the impeachment of Chief Justice Sushila Karki.

Nidhi's resignation comes following the registration of an impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki, The Kathmandu Post reports. Nidhi leads the Nepali Congress (NC), which is the largest constituent of the current ruling coalition, in the Cabinet.

According to Nidhi's personal aide Birendra Yadav, Nidhi was disappointed over the move to register an impeachment motion against CJ Karki without his knowledge. It is also reported that his supporters have been heading to Baluwater to submit his resignation.

Earlier, lawmakers from the NC and the CPN (Maoist Centre) registered an impeachment motion at the Parliament Secretariat against CJ Karki, citing various reasons including her interference with the executive.

Nepal is scheduled to hold local elections on May 14.
