Local media reported that Johannesson said that if he could, he would ban the fruity topping. Huffington Post reported that Johannesson told a group of high school students that he would "pass a ban on pineapple as a pizza topping if he had the power to pass laws on his own".

Forget pineapple. We all know the real monsters are the people who put wieners on pizza. #pineapplegate #pineappleonPizza pic.twitter.com/FLk3ObkVIW

The attention over his pineapple statement forced the President to clarify his statement. On his Facebook page, Johannesson wrote: "I like pineapples, just not on pizza. I do not have the power to make laws which forbid people to put pineapples on their pizza."
He goes on to say he "would not want to hold this position if I could pass laws forbidding that which I don't like" and would not want to live in such a country.
In a cheeky remark, he recommends seafood on pizza.
Johannesson was formerly a history professor at the University of Iceland and is the first president in the country to march in a gay pride parade.
