Former US president George H W Bush was released today from a hospital in Texas after a two-week stay for pneumonia treatment.

Bush was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on April 14 for a persistent cough.

Doctors determined he had pneumonia.

He was discharged after "being treated for a mild case of pneumonia and chronic bronchitis," according to a statement by his spokesperson Jim McGrath.

"President and Mrs (Barbara) Bush are very pleased to be home spending time with family and friends and grateful for the outstanding care provided by his doctors and nurses," the statement said.

After the pneumonia was treated, Bush remained hospitalised due to the chronic bronchitis.

Bush, the 41st US president from 1989 to 1993, was previously hospitalised for 16 days in January with pneumonia.

During that time, doctors had inserted a breathing tube and connected him to a ventilator.
