A day after Donald Trump assumed office as the 45th President of the United States, women across the world took to the streets to protest in an early indication of the strong opposition the newly inaugurated Republican may face in office.

Some of the hoarding that were on display during the protests were quite creative such as these

Several celebrities such as Madonna, who were part of the protests, also made some scathing remarks against President Trump. Not one for euphemisms, Madonna opened her speech by urging Americans to reject “this new age of tyranny, where not just women are in danger but all marginalised people, where being uniquely different right now might truly be considered a crime. It took this horrific moment of darkness to wake us the f— up.”

She later said, “To our detractors that insist that this march will never add up to anything, f— you.”  In fact, after her third use of the F-word, the CNN journalist had to take away the microphone from her.

Conservative commentators took exception most to Madonna’s remark that she had “thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House, but I know this won’t change anything.” Instead, Madonna said that rather than falling into despair, she would “choose love,” the Wrap reported.

Madonna’s remarks have not gone down well with conservatives, with Piers Morgan, who is a close friend of Trump saying, “Madonna's guaranteed all the headlines will now be about her White House bomb threat & F-word rant. She's wrecked the #WomensMarch.”

Fox News political analyst David Wohl added that Madonna was “a pathetic, washed-up, has-been who apparently thinks that threatening @realDonaldTrump will somehow spark her dead career.”

But there were several individuals who came to Madge’s rescue. British singer Lily Allen, who has always been vocal about her political views, started a battle with Piers Morgan. Allen, who previously criticised the George W Bush government over going to war in Iraq, responded to Morgan’s comments where he said, “"Imagine if there were a load of men-only marches today? The feminists would go crackers."

To which Allen asked Morgan to f*** off. Both tweets have been deleted since, although Morgan shared a screen shot of the conversation on his Twitter timeline.

Morgan then shared a picture of Allen sitting on his lap and groping his crotch with the line, “Here's a photo of Trump-hating @lilyallen grabbing my crotch."

But the war just got uglier. Allen hit back, saying, “@piersmorgan I don't remember asking you to rest your hand on my inner thigh. I think my hand gesture is my way of trying to assert some control, I'm 22 and being asked to sit on the lap of an old man"

It's officially Trump versus the media

Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer attacked the media for its coverage of Donald Trump's inauguration. Spencer accused some members of the media of deliberately engaging in 'false reporting'.

“There’s been a lot of talk in the media about the responsibility to hold Donald Trump accountable. And I’m here to tell you it goes two ways. We’re going to hold the press accountable as well,” he told reporters.

A Slate.com blog by  Daniel Politi suggested that White House veterans were 'shocked' at what transpired. “It is embarrassing, as an American, to watch this briefing by Sean Spicer from the podium at the White House,” conservative commentator William Kristol, who has long been opposed to Trump, wrote on Twitter.

According to CNN, Spicer suggested Trump would bypass traditional media outlets he believes are unfairly reporting on his presidency."The American people deserve better, and so long as he serves as the messenger for this incredible movement, he will take his message directly to the American people, where his focus will always be," Spicer said.

The press briefing has also sparked off a lot debate over the facts presented by Spicer including the number of people that attended the inauguration. "This was the largest audience to ever witness the inauguration—period. Both in person and around the globe.”

According to the Slate blog, "it's unclear how Spicer came to such a conclusion, but flat-out lying seems to be part of it."
