Bundesliga club Hamburg SV tumbled out of the German Cup first round after losing 3-1 at third division club Osnabrueck who were down to 10 men for more than 70 minutes.

In a repeat of their 2009 German Cup win over Hamburg, Osnabrueck were not deterred when Marcel Appiah was sent off with a straight red card after 18 minutes.

They scored three times before Hamburg, who were the better team in the first half, could muster any response and pull a goal back through American Bobby Wood.

Hamburg, who narrowly avoided relegation in three of the last four league seasons, became the first Bundesliga side to exit the competition.

Fellow top tier club RB Leipzig were in no mood for any similar adventures and eased past amateurs Dorfmerkingen 5-0.

Wolfsburg were made to struggle against fourth tier Norderstedt before winning 1-0, while Hanover 96 also advanced. Holders Borussia Dortmund booked their second round ticket on Saturday with a 4-0 victory over amateurs Rielasingen-Arlen and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netting a hat-trick.

Champions Bayern Munich also advanced on Saturday after beating third tier Chemnitz 5-0.
