Former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar is the frontrunner to become the next chairman of the senior national selection committee.

The 59-year-old, who played 116 Tests between 1976 and 1992, was primarily responsible for the emergence of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and several others during his first stint as chief selector from 2006 to 2008. Why, he even appointed MS Dhoni skipper of the Indian team for the inaugural World T20 in 2007.

It is understood that Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Sharad Pawar is doing everything in his power to garner support for Vengsarkar, who is a vice-president of the same body.

Pawar is expected make his presence felt at the working committee meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Kolkata on August 28. The all-powerful panel will meet to ratify the suggestions of the Indian Premier League's 'working group' formed to draw a roadmap following the suspension of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

Srini likely to attend working committee meeting

N Srinivasan is likely to attend the meeting of the BCCI's working committee in Kolkata on August 28. The former BCCI president will be there in his capacity as president of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, which is a permanent Test centre. Interestingly, the main agenda of the meeting is to discuss the fate of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Srinivasan is vice-chairman and managing director of India Cements Ltd, which recently hived off CSK and decided to run it as a wholly-owned subsidiary. A source in the Srinivasan camp say the cement baron "has nothing to do" with CSK. "The team has been suspended. It is not going to play in the IPL for two years. In any case, the team is owned by a trust, which is in turn owned by the shareholders of India Cements. This de-merger has been approved by the Supreme Court," the source said.
