Only the other day Mumbai captain Aditya Tare lavished praise on Abhishek Nayar calling him ‘indispensable’ and ‘absolute genius’. Nayar once again showed why he is held in such high regards by his teammates.

A day after he showed his class with the ball – claiming three big wickets, he proved his worth with the bat scripting a rescue act giving Mumbai an opportunity.

Batting with the middle-order and the tail, Nayar came up with a crucial 91-run knock that saw Mumbai give Gujarat a tough total – 312 — to chase on the fifth and the last day of the Ranji Trophy final at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday.

Nayar’s knock came in 146 balls and was studded with four boundaries and as many sixes.

“I was batting with Adu (Tare) and the plan was to take it as far as we can and go big after tea. But we lost a couple of wickets and that was a bit of a setback.

“At that point of time I knew that I had to take it deep. I have batted with the tail for the past two seasons now. I knew that Vishal (Dabholkar) can bat and in the first innings I got him run out.

“Otherwise we could have added more total on the board in the first innings,” he said.

However, there was some criticism too with the way he batted, not rotating the strike. “I made a conscious effort to take most of the strike and give him one or two balls, initially, to help him get the confidence.

“Once he got the confidence, we were discussing which bowler he was comfortable facing. I was giving him strike to only that bowler. It was a good communication. Having some fight it out with you gives you the motivation to take your team through,” he clarified.

Nayar batted slow before he went after the attack later on. A bit earlier would have given Mumbai enough overs to bowl.

“Not really. The plan was to go big after tea. We could have batted smarter than faster. I think we have not brought out our ‘A’ game in that aspect. Had we played smarter, we could have got lot more than what we did in the end. But from that situation, everyone has done well to help the team reach where we are now.”

Nayar said the team is optimistic and will fight it out. “It’s going to be a tough day. In cricket things can go either ways but I know the boys are going to give it all and make everyone in Mumbai proud.”
