Indian pacer Mohammad Shami's daughter was in the ICU during the second Test against New Zealand in Kolkata. However, skipper Virat Kohli revealed that he had no idea about this incident. Apparently, Shami had not informed his team-mates about this development and had kept his grief to himself.

Aairah, Shami's newborn, was hospitalised due to high fever on the second day of the second Test. Due to her condition being unstable initially, she was kept in the ICU. However, Shami continued to go about his business and was instrumental in India's success in the Kolkata Test. It was much later when the 26-year-old fast bowler informed his captain about what he was going through.

India completed a historic whitewash of the Blackcaps in the three-match Test series on Tuesday, and Shami played an important role in helping his team achieve this feat. "He (Shami) is a guy who comes on to the field and gives everything. He just needs a bit of motivation every now and then, which every fast bowler does in conditions that we have. Skill-wise there is no doubt that he is a top bowler. He has a knack of picking up wickets," said Kohli at the end of the third Test.

The Indian captain even hailed Shami for being an affable character off the field who was 'loved' by everyone in the team. "He is someone who is a character in the change room. On the field, you won't see him coming out in the open and expressing himself too much. He is someone everyone gets along with. Whatever might be happening with him, we won't know. I had no clue that his daughter was in the hospital. It was only after the second Test that he informed us about his daughter's condition."

Shami took to Twitter at the end of the third Test to show his admiration for Kohli:
