Expect a lot of fans to wake up early to watch the Australian Grand Prix, the first race of the 2017 Formula One racing season that begins this weekend.
Over the years, the rules and regulations have constantly changed. This year, there have been some more changes, including larger tyres and revised aerodynamics to make the cars run faster.
According to Formula1.com, this season also features one of the biggest regulation shake-ups since the introduction of hybrid turbo power units in 2014. “This time bodywork and tyres are the centre of attention, with both getting wider in order to boost downforce and grip, making the cars both faster and physically harder to drive,” the report says.
While the cars will be faster, starting will be a test of skill for the drivers. This is because in a bid to give more control back to the drivers, much of the clutch control has been taken off the machine and given back to them.
Another interesting move for the current season is the use of safety cars. “Safety car process will be in place if the track is unsafe. But once it peels into the pit-lane the drivers will then take up their respective grid places to engage in a standing start. This will not be the case if the safety car restart comes following a race suspension,” the report says.
Wider tyres
Tyres are around 25 percent wider than in 2016, with rear width up from 325mm to 405, and front width raised from 245mm to 305mm. Tyre diameter has also increased very slightly, though wheel rim size remains unchanged at 13 inches.
Bodywork
While the front wing span is increased from 1650mm to 1800mm, the overall width of the car is up from 1800 to 2000mm. In addition, the height of the rear wing is reduced to a maximum of 800mm, down from 950 previously. Meanwhile, the diffuser is more powerful thanks to increased height - up from 125mm to 175 - and width - up from 1000mm to 1050. It is also longer, now extending ahead of the rear wheel axle line. Maximum weight is increased from 702kg to 722kg plus tyres.
