Former Pakistan Test captain Wasim Bari has emerged as a strong candidate to be appointed either as the manager of the national cricket team or the chief selector after PCB has decided that no one would be allowed to hold dual positions in the board.
Reliable sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board told PTI that the Board of Governors at its meeting held in Lahore on Thursday had decided that dual roles lead to conflict of interests and this practice should no longer be allowed. Although there are number of former players and other officials holding dual positions in the board, the most prominent is former Test captain Moin Khan, who is working as manager of the national team and also as chief selector.
"Although Moin wrote a letter recently to the PCB, which was also discussed at the BOG meeting, saying he feels it is unfair that his dual role is being reviewed after he was initially given a two year contract," a source said.
The source added that the BOG has told Chairman Shaharyar Khan to have different people for the post of manager and chief selector as they are very important positions and lead to conflict of interest.
He said that with the board planning to enforce its new policy either after the series against Australia or after the national team finishes the series against New Zealand by December, the name of Bari had emerged as a strong candidate to replace Moin as either manager or chief selector.
"The interesting thing is that Najam Sethi, who had appointed Moin to the dual posts earlier in the year while serving as board Chairman, also supported the opinion of the other members at the BOG meeting on Thursday," the source said.
Sethi is presently a member of the BOG.
The source said Bari's name was being considered seriously since he has plenty of experience having worked as chief selector and also in management positions in the past. Bari was also the chief operating officer of the board few years back and had recently retired as head of the anti-corruption and education department in the board because of his age.
"For both the positions of manager and chief selector age is not a bar so Bari has emerged as a serious candidate and he is also close to Shaharyar Khan having worked under him in the past," the source added.
He said that former Test batsman, Mohsin Khan who had worked in the past as chief selector and then interim head coach was also in line to get a major post if Moin decide to leave both positions in protest.
Moin, in his letter, has indicated that either the board retain him on both positions or release him from both responsibilities.
