After serving a sentence of seven years in jail for murdering his girlfriend and feeding her body to dogs, Brazilian footballer Bruno Fernandes de Souza is back to doing what he loves. Goalkeeper Bruno, who last plied his trade for Flamengo in 2010 has signed a new two year deal with football club Boa Esporte in Brazil's second division Serie B.

Simply known as Bruno in his hometown the goalkeeper captained Flamengo to the summit of the Serie A table, and was set to be selected for the Brazlian national team in the 2014 World Cup. His performances for the Rio side also garnered a lot of interest amongst rumours of a multi million dollar move to Italian outfit AC Milan. But his career soon hit a nadir in 2010, after he was convicted for murdering his girlfriend Eliza Samudio and recieved a prison sentence of 22 years.

Samudio's body was never traced back, but Bruno's cousin reportedly told the court Samudio had been demanding child aid payments and that he footballer helped to dismember her body and fed it to his rottweilers. However last month, the 32-year-old was released after serving just six years of his sentence, while his lawyers still prepare for an appeal.

And despite the new deal receiving a lot of flak from the supporters and the media, Boa Esporte's president, Rone Moraes da Costa, has stood by the move saying the club hasn't committed any offence by signing the former Flamengo goalkeeper. "Esporte Clube was not responsible for the release and freedom of the athlete Bruno," da Costa said, also stating that the club was "giving work to those who intend to recover. Bruno deserves a new opportunity as a professional. The club has no relation with Bruno's personal actions, nor with his past, having hired only the professional," said Boa Esporte in a seperate post.
