Around 1,300 people that were present at the National Sports Club Of India (NSCI) to try and break the Guinness World Record for for the largest gathering of people wearing capes went back home with more than just the record.

They got to witness a really rare sight: Sourav Ganguly dancing. Draped in a cape, the former India captain tried out Zumba, a dance workout, for 10 minutes as part of Tetley Super Green Tea’s — of which he is the brand ambassador — attempt to break the record. Initially reluctant to join the dancing group, Ganguly then got grooving, showing everyone he wasn’t just all about cricket. His dancing skills might not have been exemplary but it surely won him a fan in Bollywood actress Neha Dhupia. “Sourav is my dancing inspiration now,” Neha said.

“What amazed me was that when we started off, he was like, ‘I’m not going to dance, I’m just going to stand on one side’. But then the energy and everything else came together and he tried every step. That’s from someone who said he wasn’t going to dance. That’s inspiring.”

Ganguly was quick to cut in. “That’s because the beats were so good, they were more of an exercise beat than dance. Sometimes you need to get out of your set systems in life,” he said. Ganguly, who confessed to have shaken a leg only after 10 years after last doing so during a tour to the West Indies, isn’t averse to learning more dance steps. “I haven’t tried learning to dance. I told Neha to teach me dancing the next time we meet. I told Neha and Shibani (Dandekar) to stand with me the next time, so that at least I don’t look out of place,” Ganguly said. Not sure you were, Dada.
