CBI takes over probe into​ Narsingh Yadav doping case

The complaint was filed by Yadav himself and in the FIR registered by local police, it was alleged that Jitesh, from Dariyapur Kalan, allegedly mixed narcotics and banned substances in the Olympics-bound grappler's meals and drinks.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe into doping scandal involving international wrestler ​​Narsingh Yadav on Tuesday.

The bureau re-registered a case under section that include criminal conspiracy and poisoning. Yadav, who had alleged a conspiracy against him, was barred from participating in Rio Olympics after banned substances were found in his urine samples.

The probe agency on Tuesday said a case was registered by CBI on the request of Haryana government and further notification from Government of India. Officials said that investigators re-registered the FIR filed by Haryana police in which a wrestler called Jitesh, was named as accused under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy, 328 (poisoning) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The complaint was filed by Yadav himself and in the FIR registered by local police, it was alleged that Jitesh, from Dariyapur Kalan, allegedly mixed narcotics and banned substances in the Olympics-bound grappler's meals and drinks.

“It was alleged that spiking of some restricted material (narcotic) in the meal/water of said international wrestler was to stop his participation in Rio Olympics for which he had qualified," said CBI spokesperson Devpreet Singh said.

CBI had the mandate to re-register the FIR filed by state police and is free to come up with any conclusion which emerges during probe.

About 20 days prior to the Olympic games, the wrestler had tested positive for banned substance and debarred from representing India at the Rio Games in 74 kg freestyle wrestling. However, National Anti Doping Agency allowed him to participate in the Games as it accepted the claims of sabotage by the wrestler the wrestler was subsequently slapped with a four-year ban by the Court of Arbitration (CAS) following World Anti-Doping Agency challenge to the clean chit given to him by the NADA.
