17 last-ball wins while chasing in IPL history

1:  IPL 2008: Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Daredevils at Delhi

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) needed 22 runs for two overs to beat the home-side Delhi Daredevils (DD) with skipper MS Dhoni and Chamara Kapugedara out in the middle. However Yo Mahesh dismissed both batsmen off his first two balls and gave away only seven runs. Fifteen were required from the last over, when DD skipper Virender Sehwag trusted Shoaib Malik with the ball.

For CSK, it was Manpreet Gony on strike. He clobbered a six over mid-wicket in the first ball. A wide followed and then a boundary off the edge and a single. One run was needed from the last ball with Subramaniam Badrinath on strike. Badri lofted one to the mid-wicket and Shikhar Dhawan almost pouched it with a superb effort. Unfortunately he couldn’t and CSK won! Since then they made it a habit to clinch thrillers.

2:  IPL 2008: Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians at Jaipur

Rajasthan Royals (RR) required 43 from three overs, but young Ravindra Jadeja and Niraj Patel kept their nerves. Finally, 15 were needed from the last six balls and Dilhara Fernando was trusted with the job. Four came from the first two, and then Patel hit one over the long-on for a six. RR needed three to win off the last ball with Patel on strike.

Fernando bowled a wide and it was now two needed. They could have still defended that, but what followed was a comedy of errors. Patel mishit a slog pull, Fernando misfielded in his follow through and ball went towards mid-on, Dwayne Smith stopped it and fired in a throw.

The batsmen went for two and Jadeja was clearly struggling to make it at the non-striker’s end, but Sanath Jayasuriya failed to collect it clean and affect the run out, much to the delight of the Jaipur fans. RR had pulled it off.

3:  IPL 2008  final: Rajasthan Royalvs Chennai Super Kings at Navi Mumbai

It was the final of the inaugural IPL and RR, which had been the most consistent team in the tournament, needed eight to lift the trophy. The batsmen at crease were Sohail Tanvir and skipper Shane Warne. CSK’s Balaji began well and first half of the over cost just two runs.

With six needed from three, Balaji bowled a wide and the batsmen ran. The blunder brought the difference down and just four was needed from three. Three came from the next two and with one needed from the last ball;Tanvir pulled a short delivery towards mid-on and completed the single. The Warne led RR, which was the best side in the competition, won the inaugural IPL.

Yusuf Pathan deservingly won the man-of-the-match for his splendid all-round performance. He picked up three wickets for 22 runs to restrict the CSK to 163 and later scored a match-winning 56 with the bat.

4:  IPL 2009:Kings XI Punjab vs Kolkata Knight Riders at Port Elizabeth

Looking at the score card, the end did look close, but Kings XI Punjab’s Mahela Jayawardene had the chase under control. They needed seven from the last over and Ajit Agarkar gave away only one from his first two, Jaya got an outside edge off the third ball and it ran away for a boundary. The pressure was released and the batsman got to his fifty. The fourth ball was another dot, but Jaya managed to get a single from the fifth.

With one needed from the last ball, Irfan Pathan kept his cool and got the ball past through in-field to complete a single and a win.

5:  IPL 2009: Deccan Chargers vs Kolkata Knight Riders at Johannesburg

In the 2009 season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) just found a way to lose matches and this was one of those. Deccan Chargers needed 27 runs from the last two overs and Agarkar bowled a brilliant penultimate over, giving away just six runs. With 21 needed from the final over, one would usually back the bowling side to seal it off. Brendon McCullum, the KKR skipper, entrusted Mashrafe Mortaza with the responsibility of the last over.

On strike was Rohit Sharma, a young cricketer with sky-high reputation who showed what he was capable of. The first ball was a no-ball and Rohit smacked it for a boundary towards square-leg. Two singles followed in the consequent deliveries. Now 14 from four and what Mortaza bowled was a juicy full-toss. Rohit smacked it over deep mid-wicket for a massive 115-m six.

Mortaza followed the awful delivery with a wide this time. The fourth ball was hit for a two and the fifth ball was again a full and wide, which Rohit smacked for another boundary. Rohit had brought it down to one from one. Mortaza, who had bowled terribly, now gifted a short-ball to the batsman and Rohit finished it off with a six this time. All Mortaza needed was to stop 21, and he gave away 26!

6:  IPL 2009: Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders at Centurion

Having been at the receiving ends on several occasions, KKR reversed the tide this time. Powered by brilliant fifties from Brendon McCullum and Brad Hodge, KKR pulled off one of the most thrilling chases in the competition.

KKR needed 25 from two overs and Balaji, who was bowling the penultimate over was clobbered for 19 runs. Hodge hit him for two sixes and in the last ball; Wriddhiman dispatched him over the mid-wicket boundary. With only six required from the last over, Dhoni gave the ball to his trusted lieutenant Suresh Raina, who gave away two from his first three.

In the fourth ball, he missed a run out chance of Hodge. The fifth ball was played for two by Saha and with one needed from the final ball,Saha chipped one over the cover to complete a memorable KKR win.

7:  IPL 2011: Mumbai Indians vs Pune Warriors at Mumbai

It wasn’t the best track to bat on and it was evident with how batsmen from both sides struggled to get going. In a low scoring game, it came down to the last ball. Needing five runs from the last over, MI’s Rohit Sharma and Andrew Symonds managed to get four from the five deliveries that were bowled by ace left-arm spinner Murali Kartik.

With one required from as many, Rohittonked the last ball over the extra cover for a maximum. Mumbai had a mess of the chase of 119, but finally got the much needed two points.

8:  IPL 2011: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians at Kolkata

KKR were eying their debut in Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) later that year. With MI needing 21 from the last over, not even the most ardent supporters felt optimistic about the chase. Balaji bowled the last over and James Franklin was on strike.

It went: 4, 4, 4, 4 and then a single. Still MI needed four to win from the last ball and on strike was Ambati Rayudu. Balaji bowled a full-toss and Rayudu did a Javed Miandad, by hitting him over the square-leg boundary for a six. MI had sealed the thriller.

9:  IPL 2012: Deccan Chargers vs Mumbai Indians at Visakhapatnam

Once again it was Mumbai Indians who sealed it in style. This time they required 18 runs from the last over but Franklin and Rohit completed the task like pros. Daniel Christian, who had a good outing with the bat, scoring 39 from 26, bowled the last over. Franklin had struck a boundary off the first ball and Rohit, a six off the fourth.

MI needed three from the last ball and Christian dished out a full-toss. Rohit clubbed it over long on to guide Mumbai to a memorable win.

10:  IPL 2012: Chennai Super Kings vs Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chennai

With 43 needed from two overs, you don’t expect the batting side to pull games off, but with a striker like Albie Morkel around, you expect the unexpected. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) didn’t know that they were getting into a suicide mode when they Virat Kohliwas trusted to ball the penultimate over. Morkel took him for 28 runs.

Even then, they needed 15 from the last over and it was Vinay Kumar who was bowling.  The first two balls went for a run and Morkel was sent back. Dwayne Bravo got it to a point they required two from the last ball and Jadeja was on strike facing the first ball. Jadeja edged it for a boundary and CSK had pulled off one of the most spectacular run-chases.

11:  IPL 2012: Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Pune Warriors at Bangalore

Pune Warriors (PW) did everything they possibly could to win the match. They put on a good score and later with some good bowling restricted the strong RCB batting line-up for the major part of the chase. With 28 needed from 12 balls, and with AB de Villiers and Saurabh Tiwary going good, the best Ashok Dinda could do was bowl a seven-run over and he did that.

With 21 required from the final over, PW skipper Sourav Ganguly turned to the experience of Ashish Nehra. Tiwary gave a single to de Villiers who clobbered a boundary and two sixes in the next three balls, followed by a single. There was still three to get from the last ball and Tiwary dispatched a length ball over long-on for a six. PW managed to lose another.

12:  IPL 2012: Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals at Chennai

This was another classic example of how quick a T20 game can change. CSK needed 31 from four overs with nine wickets in hand. RR’s Kevon Cooper then bowled a two run over and picked up two wickets, and the ones of the set batsmen Faf du Plessis and Raina. While Cooper kept it tight, Amit Singh leaked runs and it all came down to eight from the last over.

Dhoni and Bravo were in the middle for CSK and by their standards this wasn’t a tough job but Stuart Binny kept it tight and CSK could manage only six from the first five with two required from the final over. Binny bowled a full toss and Dhoni flicked it away towards the deep square-leg and ran two. CSK managed to win another.

13:  IPL 2012: Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings at Mumbai

MI made a complete mess of a run-chase that was looking seemingly easy. They needed 43 to win from five overs and were only two wickets down. In an act of hara-kiri, they scored only 27 runs in the next four overs and lost five wickets. They needed 16 runs from the final over, but they had Dwayne Smith at the crease. Hilfenhaus dismissed Malinga off the second ball and Smith was on strike with 14 required from the last three.

What happened from there is for fairy tale. Smith clubbed a full-toss over the long-on boundary for a six and then smacked one over the bowler’s head for a four. He had brought it down to four from the last ball. He then smashed one to long-off for another boundary. Wankhede Stadium erupted and it was truly one of the most sensational wins the format has witness!

14:  IPL 2012: Kings XI Punjab vs Deccan Chargers at Mohali

Chasing a total in excess of 190 isn’t an easy job but KXIP pulled this one off in style. They needed 16 from the last over and Gony was trusted with the job. He went for three in the first two and then a relatively unknown Gurkeerat Singh smacked him for a six and a four.

Then came a two which meant they required one from the final ball. Gony bowled a short one and Gurkeerat hooked it towards the fine-leg region for another boundary. DC, who were having a dismal season, had found another way to lose.

15:  IPL 2012: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Chennai Super Kings at Kolkata

Tight bowling from KKR pulled the game in their favour and CSK now needed 27 from two overs. Dhoni, one of the best finishers in limited-overs cricket was severe on Merchant de Lange, who bowled the 19th over and took 18 from it.

With nine required from the final over, Rajat Bhatia got Dhoni out to the second ball and went for only four in his first five balls. CSK needed five from the last ball and Bhatia just couldn’t hold on to his nerves. He bowled a low full toss and Bravo deposited it over the long-on for a maximum. The win helped CSK to stay alive in the competition and they later made it to the final and faced the same opposition, but this time KKR prevailed.

DD had lost 10 games in a row and when they reached 184, they might have thought that they were lucky the 11th time. They did everything they could to ensure a win. RR needed 19 from two overs and Imran Tahir bowled a brilliant penultimate over, giving away seven runs and dismissing the dangerous looking Deepak Hooda and James Faulkner.

Angelo Mathews was given the responsibility to bowl the last over and RR needed 12 from it. Nine came from the first five and they now needed three from the final delivery. Tim Southee was on strike. He dispatched the last ball through the covers for a four and his meant that DD had lost again.

In a low scoring match, RR needed just five from the last over. The batsmen at crease were Binny and Faulkner. Praveen Kumar bowled a brilliant last over giving away just four from the first five. One was needed from the last ball and Praveen, in attempt of another yorker bowled a full toss. Faulkner carved it away in between cover and backward point for a boundary.
