Homegrown handset maker Micromax today said its recently launched 'Vdeo' range of affordable smartphones contributed about 25 per cent to its sales volume in the last two months.

Launched in December last year, the company has four handsets in the Vdeo range, priced Rs 4,440 onwards. It had launched the 4G-enabled series, bundled with Reliance Jio SIMs, aimed at consolidating its position in the entry-level smartphone market of the country.

"The range has done extremely well for us. It was launched in December and in the last two months, it accounted for 25 per cent of the volume," Micromax Chief Marketing Officer Shubhajit Sen told reporters here.

The company had partnered with Corning to incorporate its Gorilla Glass to help protect the screen against damage.

"Value-segment smartphone customers typically spend a significant portion of their income buying a device. Many of these first-time smartphone users simply cannot afford to repair or to replace a damaged device," Corning Gorilla Glass Vice President and General Manager John Bayne said.

He added that this is why it is essential to protect these devices with a material like Corning Gorilla Glass that is tough and damage-resistant.

According to a poll, about 58 per cent respondents said their smartphone is the most expensive thing that they carry with them daily, and their single biggest worry is damaging their device.

Also, 68 per cent respondents said they worry about dropping and breaking their screen.

Besides, over 65 per cent of value-segment (sub-Rs 6,500) smartphones are reported to have significant screen damage with more scratches per device than consumers in other segments.
