The Shanghai Edition of the Mobile World Congress took place at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) from July 15-17, 2015. Previously known as the Mobile Asia Expo, the GSMA (GSM Association) rebranded this event as MWC Shanghai, starting this year.

 The opening keynote session highlighted Asia’s growing dominance in the mobile space. Ninety percent of all mobile handsets in the world are now produced by Asian brands. The Asia region is now home to 3.8 billion mobile connections (out of 7.5 billion in the world). China Mobile, the world’s largest operator, is predicting its data traffic to increase 300 times by 2025. The company has 200 million 4G users

We also spotted ZTE’s new low-cost action camera that was also showcased at the MWC Barcelona. The 16MP shooter (BSI CMOS,170” wide angle) comes with a Micro SD slot and Micro USB connectivity.  ZTE also showed off its second generation ‘Spro 2’ Mobile device based Pico projector.

5. Intex launches standalone-capable smartwatch iRist

Indian mobile handset manufacturer Intex unveiled its first smartwatch – the iRist at the event. This device is positioned as a standalone smartwatch with its own Micro SIM slot and also supports extendable memory. The device will go on sale in August at a price of Rs 11,999.

Jolla announced that its Sailfish 2.0 OS would be available for Jolla users by August; the company also announced that Intex will become the first global licensing partner to run Sailfish 2.0 on its devices – on the Intex Aqua Fish that will debut in November.

Wearables were all over the MWC Shanghai. Mykronoz , the Swiss Smartwatch company put its entire range on display while the innovative smartwatch for musicians (it creates metronomes through powerful vibrations) – Soundbrenner Pulse that is on a funding drive got a lot of attention.

From shoes with GPS trackers for kids to the Oral B Bluetooth enabled toothbrush that syncs with your smartphones, to Thinfilm’s Smart Wine Bottle with a printable electronic tab (to check counterfeit wines), the MWC Shanghai illustrated how mobile technologies are rapidly integrating into our everyday lifestyle.
