Nepal Earthquake: Punekars come forward to collect relief funds

Individuals working at multinational companies, few bikers and many students are sending food, water and other necessary material to the affected country.

In the wake of the Nepal earthquake, that has left thousands dead, several volunteers, individuals and organisations from Pune city have extended support to the victims.

As Nepal has been receiving international aid, many citizens in Pune have also come forward to contribute their bit. Individuals working at multinational companies, few bikers and many students are sending food, water and other necessary material to the affected country.

MNC worker collects water for victims
Sharayan Iyengar, 31, who works in an MNC, has started collecting water with the help of family and friends.

Speaking with iamin, Iyenger said, “I plan to send nearly 10,000 litres of water to the victims in Nepal. A crate of 500 ml bottles cost nearly Rs 116. I am ordering 80 to 100 crates with 24 bottles each from a bottle manufacturing company.”
Iyenger has previously worked on a social platform with several schools and children. “We have got in touch with the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) also to help us in sending the material to Nepal.

Students extend support
Despite the on-going examinations, a group of Fergusson College students including some Nepali students are holding a meeting on April 30, to send as much help possible to the affected area. “We will be approaching presidents of lawyer association, doctors associations and other professions for donations. We shall buy things that would be required by the people there and send them through Nepali students who are here in India,” said Mohommad Saif, 23, student.

Bikers do their bit
Representing a group of riders in India, Devjeet Saha of Pune is also working towards collecting funds and food items for the victims. “Riders all over India have been approached for collection of funds. In Pune I will be handling the donations and sending them across to Lucknow first,” said Saha.
