Pune: The areas of Kharadi, Chandannagar and Wadgaon Sheri despite having witnessed tremendous growth with shopping malls, multiplexes and other commercial establishments coming up in last few years, the residents of these areas are still struggling to get basic amenities. The residents also claimed that the problem of encroachment is growing in the entire area but the Pune Municipal Corporation is turning a blind eye towards their problems.

In the last decade, the areas of Kharadi, Chandannagar and Wadgaon Sheri have witnessed a lot of construction activities and various commercial establishments have also come up in these areas, making Nagar road a commercial hub. The residential as well as commercial sectors around Nagar road are growing, the vehicular movement in areas like Kharadi, Wadgaon Sheri and Chandannagar has increased a lot. However the residents have been complaining that the lanes and by-lanes are encroached upon by the street stall vendors, due to which these areas face traffic jams during peak hours on every morning and evening.
Ashish Mane, Convener of Wadgaon Sheri Citizens forum told dna, “We have seen this area developing in the last decade and by way of property tax and other taxes, residents of these areas are giving a good amount of revenue to the PMC. The population of Wadgaon Sheri alone is around 3.5 lakh but when it comes to providing basic amenities to the residents, PMC is not at all paying attention to our demands.”

“We have been demanding civic administration to remove all the encroachment in the area which will ease out the traffic situation. The vendors have taken up most of the street and footpath space, making it difficult for us to use roads for driving or even for walking. In our meetings with the ward officer, we have been demanding removal of encroachments, but no action has been taken so far,” Mane said.

The members of the forum went to the PMC main building to meet officials of the water department on Thursday. The residents claimed that though the entire city is getting less water due to water scarcity, the areas of Wadgaon Sheri, Kharadi are facing problems of water shortage every year.
When contacted, Madhav Deshpande, ward officer of Nagar road ward office of PMC, he said, “ As per the hawkers policy, we are carrying out the survey of all the hawkers from the area. Nearly 95 percent of the survey has been completed. Now we will identify the alternate areas and then the authorised hawkers will be shifted to those spots.”
