Pune: BJP state spokesperson Madhav Bhandari on Monday said that the Election Commission of India has shown readiness into inquiring about the lakhs of Sangli voters' names being dumped into Pune's list. However, Bhandari added, that although that at present these voters can not be prevented from exercising their franchise, their address and identity details would be thoroughly checked.
BJP state unit president Devendra Fadanavis had revealed last week that as many as 1.08 lakh voters from Sangli Lok Sabha constituency also appear in the Pune Lok Sabha seat voter's list. Fadanavis had alleged that it was done at the behest of Congress-NCP candidate Vishwajeet Kadam, since he hails from Sangli. Congress-NCP and Kadam had refuted the allegations, suggesting that the EC was the proper authority to clear the air.
Bhandari and advocate Vinayak Abhyankar from the legal cell of BJP visited Delhi and called on the deputy-chief election commissioner, Sudheer Tripathi who is also in-charge of the CEC office for the Maharashtra elections. Tripathi also expressed surprise that such a big numbers of voters had been replicated in two constituencies.
Bhandari told the media that district collector and district election officer Saurabh Rao has tried to downplay this issue, since the district administration was responsible for inclusion voters in the electoral roll of the Pune Lok Sabha constituency.
Interestingly, Rao had said that there was nothing earth-shaking, since there are four lakh names which are appear twice in the list.
Flying squad sabotaging Modi's 3D show?
Bhandari alleged that the district election office's flying squad tried to sabotage Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's 3D shows by stopping three vehicles carrying equipment at Shirur for last four days. Abhyankar and Phadke pointed out that three vehicles was carrying equipment for 240 corner meetings that boasted of 3D effects. Interestingly, Phadke pointed out, "The three containers are still there, stopped under sections 127C and section 232 of Motor Vehicle Act, which do not exist."
