The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is considering placing nets below Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) to put an end to people committing suicides at this point by jumping from the bridge. Various other ideas too figured at the discussion on tackling the increasing incidents of suicides in the area at a joint meeting between officials of MSRDC and Mumbai police.
The meeting was called by deputy commissioner of police (Zone III) S Jaykumar and MSRDC officials. MSRDC has been forced to find a solution to suicides taking place here after four incidents were reported in just two weeks.
Apart from the decision on life-saver net, it was also decided to increase the height of the railings in order to ensure that no one would be able to climb over the bridge and jump into the water.
Police and MSRDC officials have also agreed on the need for more CCTV cameras on the sea link to help police monitor the entire stretch. The need for more security guards in the area to keep vigil and prevent anyone from jumping into the sea was also felt.
DCP Jaykumar said: "We had a meeting with MSRDC officials regarding the suicides. We have zeroed in on certain measures. MSRDC officials will discuss the plan with superior officers and after getting their approval, it will be executed."
"The police have decided to increase motorcycle patrolling in the area. Apart from that, we have also decided to book and issue chalan to those who stop their car on BWSL to click pictures, he added.
An MSRDC official said more CCTV cameras would be installed in the area. There are now six cameras here. Twenty more are to be installed for better surveillance and monitoring.
"To raise the height of the crash barriers or railings on BWSL, environmental authorities in the state and Centre would have to give additional clearance," the official added.
