The Kherwadi police on Wednesday arrested a woman for allegedly fraudulently collecting funds for cancer patients on the name of an NGO, with whom she is not associated.

The arrested accused has been identified as Mamta Yadav, a resident of Bhandup.

According to the police, Yadav had forged the necessary documents of Global Vision, a Thane-based NGO which helps cancer patients in need. "Yadav was working with the NGO four years ago, but at the moment isn't associated with it. She, however, collected money from various places and people, claiming to be a part of Global Vision by forging its documents," said deputy commissioner of police, detection, Dhananjay Kulkarni.

He added that the accused used to hoodwink people by showing false medical documents of fake patients, saying they are in need of financial help for operation.

"The police had received a complaint from NGO official Dilip Jana (30), after which the police laid a trap in the Mhada office at Bandra and arrested Yadav red-handed," said an officer.

She was arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for forgery and cheating.
