Bharat Ratna awardee and iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar was shocked upon learning about a woman from Nallasopara going around distributing invitation cards purportedly signed and stamped by her and demanding funds for various causes in social circles. The veteran singer directed her close associate to file a formal complaint at Gamdevi police station on her behalf.

According to police, Mahesh Rathod, the complainant in the case, has alleged that one Revati Khare, a resident of Achole Gaon in Nallasopara, was allegedly distributing invitation cards with a purported signature and stamp of the singer. Khare met people in various city events and boasted about her connections with the Mangeshkar family and sought funds for different causes, the plaintiff alleged.

"Many people gave money to her assuming that the singer was a part of these campaigns and events that were to be organised. The incident came to light after one of the persons Khare approached knew Mangeshkar family very closely and informed them about the incident," said an officer from Gamdevi police station.

"After learning about this, Lata Mangeshkar directed a close family associate to file a complaint on her behalf; so, we have registered an FIR in the case under sections 420 (cheating), 465(forgery), 468(forgery for cheating), and 471(using genuine as forged) of the Indian Penal Code," said Dnyaneshwar Chavan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 2.

"We have not made an arrest in the case yet, and are trying to find out how many people the woman has cheated so far," Chavan said.
