The Nagpada police on Saturday arrested a 45-year-old woman for allegedly kidnapping a 2-year-old boy while he was playing outside his home. The locals raised an alarm after they spotted the woman fleeing with the boy, then chased her down and caught her.

Namijaan Mandal, the accused, is a resident of Malda district in West Bengal.

"The child's mother heard other children shouting that a small boy had been picked up by a woman. She came out of her house and saw a burqa-clad woman running away with her son," said an officer from Nagpada police station.

The mother started shouting for help, after which her neighbours chased Mandal down and managed to get hold of her. There was a lot of chaos at the spot, which attracted the attention of a police patrolling party.

"The woman was taken to the police station but could not understand any language other than Bengali. We got know of her identity through a translator. We are investigating why she had abducted the boy and whether she is associated with any child trafficking or begging racket," the officer said, adding that Mandal had been booked under section 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code.
