In a bid to escape from the clutches of the locals in Virar, three lady thieves removed their clothes in public and tried to escape. The trio was arrested and handed over to the police by the locals who chased after them.

According to the police, three women had entered into a bungalow at Kargil Nagar in Virar and a CCTV camera showed them entering. The trio had managed to flee with three expensive cellphones from the bungalow, belonging to social activist Manish Raut. On Wednesday, they were again spotted in the locality when they were chased and nabbed by the locals.

"As soon we started chasing them, they removed their clothes in order to escape. Few of us informed other women in the locality and asked them to catch them," said Manish Raut.

"We had registered a case of theft with the Virar police and after identifying them, the police made the arrest," said Raut.

Moreover, the modus operandi of these women is to masquerade as beggars and steal valuables from shops and houses. Ghanshyam Adhav, Police Inspector, Virar police station, said, "We have arrested the accused women for theft. We suspect that they conduct recce in the locality and later target vacant houses."

"We are investigating if more persons are involved and how many places were/ are on their radar," said Adhav.
