The Vikhroli police have arrested four persons for allegedly assaulting a 38-year-old man. The video of the assault had gone viral on social media and showed the four persons, who were drunk, kicking the man and hitting him mercilessly with a belt.

The people who have been arrested are Vikhroli residents Kamlesh Shetty, Sachin Chaure, Jayesh Kamble and Kalu Shetty. The police said that complainant Raju Bhatanpur and the arrested people are known to each other as they reside in the same locality.

Kamlesh Shetty had invited Bhatanpur to come to his residence for drinks on Wednesday afternoon. But a quarrel ensued between the two, after they had reached a state of inebriation, over an alleged derogatory statement that Bhatanpur had made about Kamlesh’s wife, the police said.

“Kamlesh, Sachin, Jayesh and Kalu undressed me and assaulted me with a belt and burnt me with cigarette butts. I kept crying out aloud for help, but no one could hear me since the TV was on. One of the attackers also used his mobile phone to record a video of me being attacked and shared it online. Later, after they let me go, I informed my family and the police about the incident,” Bhatanpur said.

“All the accused in the case have been arrested on Thursday. They were booked on charges of causing hurt with dangerous weapons, wrongful confinement and intentional insult,” said DCP (Zone VII) Sachin Patil.
