Mumbai's Versova beach clean-up drive, which has bagged the title of the world's largest beach clean-up exercise, will be completing its 100th week this Saturday. Over 2,000 people are expected to hit the beach this weekend to clear it off all the trash and garbage.

As an icing to their 100th-week celebrations of ridding Versova beach of 7.2 million kilograms of trash, actor Amitabh Bachchan, who had joined Afroz Shah and his team in cleaning the beach on August 13, has gifted the clean-up mission an excavator and a tractor on Thursday to aid it further.

An excited Versova-based lawyer, Afroz Shah, who is a recipient of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) 'Champion of the Earth' Award and also initiated the clean-up drive, said that they had no words to describe the actor's gesture.

"It's been exactly one month since he joined us on the beach and helped clean it and during that interaction, he was generally asking us about the challenges. Apart from a lot of other things, I casually told him about the machinery and today he surprised us all by gifting us these two machines and it speaks volumes on how concerned he is about ensuring that the oceans are cleaned up," he said.

Shah said that over 2,000 people are expected on Saturday when they will clean the beach between 3 pm and 5 pm. "We are expecting the United Nations Environment team from Nairobi, apart from students from over nine schools and colleges as well as the regular people who join us along with staff from Maritime Board, BMC and others," he said, adding that this week they have decided to take a break on Sunday as the team has been tirelessly cleaning the beach post immersion late into the nights.
