Two mayors along with other officials from the United States visited the Mahim Dargah on Thursday and interacted with members of different religious and spiritual communities. They are in Mumbai as part of their India trip where they are travelling around the country to understand ways in which cities are dealing with violent extremism.
The delegation included Tom Tait, Mayor of Anaheim, California, Greg Fischer, Mayor of Louiville, Kentucky, and officials from the US State Department's Bureau of Counterterrorism and Countering Violent Extremism, and research centers. They met and interacted with representatives of educational institutes, members of Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh and Parsi communities, and businessmen.
"We have been running a counter extremism program and they appreciated that. They want to start a mission of humanity, peace and counter terrorism," said Sohail Khandwani, trustee of Mahim Dargah.
Tait said: "We have always called our city sea of kindness. The idea behind is that people be kinder to someone they do not know and do something for them while not expecting anything in return."
"I come from the city of Muhammed Ali. He would often say that one should be a big bad humanitarian in the city. Your city is a model for entire world to learn from," said Fischer. The main topic of discussion was the message of peace and harmony mentioned in different religions. "We are into spirituality and what we say is that world transformation happens through self-transformation," said Sister Anjali of Bramhakumaris.
MAHIM DARGAH
- One of the oldest Dargahs in the city. It has the grave of 14th century Sufi saint and scholar of international repute, Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahimi (1372 AD - 1431 AD).
- He lived during the time of the Tuglaq dynasty and Sultan Ahmed Shah of Gujarat. He was married to the Sultan's sister.
