Two people were arrested late on Sunday night from the Naupada area in Thane for raping a 16-year-old mentally challenged for the past four months.

Ganesh Pandharinath Wagh (24), who was working at the Ballareshwar snacks corner, at first, forcibly pulled the girl inside the shop by offering her breakfast and raped her.

The girl does not have parents and was staying with her paternal aunt. The incident came to light when the girl missed her periods and when her guardians took her to the doctor, they were shocked to find that she was pregnant.

The girl was first raped in mid November while on her way to school.

An official from the Naupada police station said: "Wagh would often give the girl breakfast for free and that day he lured her and raped her. He then told this to his friend Ganesh Prabhakar (40), an estate agent. Wagh told him even he can do the same to the girl."

Prabhakar then took the girl twice or thrice to his home and raped her.

"In between, the accused gave a mobile phone to the girl and asked her to meet them whenever they called her. But her aunt returned the phone, saying that they are very poor and cannot afford things like this. Later, one day, the victim missed her menstrual cycle and even vomitted. The aunt took her to the doctor for a check-up and it was then they came to know that the girl was two-and-a-half-month pregnant. The aunt was completely shocked and later she recalled the incident about the mobile phone and lodged a complaint with our police station," he said.

A family member of the girl said that since the girl behaved normally, they never suspected anything.

Both the accused have been arrested under Section 376 and several sections of the Prevention Of Children From Sexual Offences Act 2012 of the IPC. They have been produced in court.
