Three people robbed a popular Colaba store of garments worth Rs48,880 on Friday. The Colaba police, who are investigating the case, said one of them has been arrested.

Explaining what happened, officers said the trio entered the store on Friday on the pretext of making some purchases. While two kept the salesman busy, the third started putting clothes in a bag. Within minutes, the three left the store with their booty. The salesman soon found that some clothes were missing from the counter and managed to chase down one of the accused with the stolen property.

The arrested person has been identified as Nagesh Ungarla (35), a resident of Gala Nagar in Nalasopara (East) and a native of Telangana.

According to the police, complainant PB Giddi (26) works as a salesman at the shop on Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road and is a resident of Mhada Colony in Andheri (East).

On Friday around 10.45am, when Giddi and a colleague were in the shop, the three came there. Because the other salesman was busy with customers, Giddi alone had to tend to the trio. Two kept him busy, asking him to show them jeans and trousers, while Ungarla, who had come a handbag, allegedly went about the job.

"After a while, Giddi saw one of the accused signalling Ungarla to leave, and immediately, he leaving in a rush. Giddi then saw the other two leaving as well and getting into a cab. Giddi realised that five jeans, one pair of shorts and 14 trousers, all worth Rs48,880, were missing from the sales counter," said an officer from Colaba police station.

He added that Giddi came out from the store and saw Ungarla fleeing with the bag. He chased him down and, with the help of the police, brought him to the police station.

Ungarla has been booked under sections 380 (theft) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code and efforts are on to nab the other two unknown culprits, an officer said.
