The rising inflation has made everything expensive, including health care. The urban poor cannot afford to go to a private hospital and is at the mercy of government hospitals where quality care is missing. To make health care affordable to such people, a Thane NGO has tied up with 47 hospitals in the city, which will offer them 30% discount on hospital bills.

V Care Welfare Association, a local NGO, was registered in 2010 and since the past two months, they have launched the V Care health card that promises to give benefits to needy patients. All that the patients have to do is become a member by paying Rs100 and avail the 30% discount on total bill.

Of the 47 hospitals that the NGO has tied up with includes Godbole hospital, Aarogyam hospital, Aayush hospital, Shree hospital, Hardev hospital, Titan hospital, among others.

Tushar D Rasal, president of V Care, who has worked with insurance companies in the past, got this idea to make health-care services affordable to the poor.

"I realised that not everyone in this country can afford to buy health insurance. There are people who earn monthly salary that ranges between Rs6000 and Rs10,000. The health insurance premium will constitute their entire month's salary," said Rasal.

Moving ahead with his plan, Rasal got in touch with various hospitals in Thane who agreed to be a part of it. "I have been practicing in Wagle Estate since the past 38 years and came across many patients who are financially incapable," said Dr Jyotsana Thakur, director and owner of Shree hospital, which claims to be the first hospital in Wagle Estate, Thane west. "We can afford to give 30% discount and pass on the benefits to poor patients. While 30% discount will be on our hospital bill, for pathology tests done outside, we will see how much we discount we can offer," she added.

Similarly, Dr Pramod Jadhav, director of Hardev Nursing Home and Intensive Care Unit in Mulund and Diva agreed to be a part of this scheme. "There are patients who do not have money even to do ECG or get an operation done. So, on human grounds, we agreed to offer them discount," said Jadhav.

The popularity of this scheme can be seen as in the past two months 35000 Thanekars have opted for V health card. "By year-end, we want to grow our membership to one lakh. I hope to spread this scheme to entire Maharashtra," said Rasal.
