In a fit of rage, father of a deceased kidnapping and murder victim fired at a juvenile accused in the premises of the juvenile court in Nashik on Wednesday.

According to police, 17-year-old Mohitesh Baviskar was kidnapped by his two friends on October 14, 2015. On the following day, after killing him, they called his father and demanded a ransom of Rs20 lakh. They had thrown the body of the victim in a drain of a farm in Trimbakeshwar.

A juvenile and another person, Akash Prabhu (18), were arrested by the police for murder. While the deceased Mohitesh and the accused juvenile hailed from Malegaon, Prabhu was from Jawhar. Three were studying in Nashik and staying in a hostel.

For the past 10 months, the case is on trial with the minor accused in the juvenile court. The other accused is in central jail. The juvenile is in remand home on Trimbak road.

Around 1.25pm, the accused was being brought to the court which is only a few metres away from the remand home. It was during this that Mohitesh's father Pralin came in a rickshaw, holding a firearm in his hands and fired a shot at the accused. The bullet brushed against the left hand of the accused. Shocked, the accused started to run, but he was held by the people around. Pralin escaped in the rickshaw.

The injured accused was taken to civil hospital.

"There has always been a need for proper security at the remand home. Demands for the same have been made by the remand home as well as the judicial magistrate of the juvenile court. Incidents like these are very unfortunate," stated chairman of the remand home Chandulal Shah.

Police commissioner S Jaggannathan said that the investigating officer and the police have been in regular contact with the father of the victim. "The police have taken extra efforts to counsel the father and the family," he said.

It is understood that Pralin had come to know that the accused was to confess to the crime in the court and the father thought that being a minor he may get away with minimal punishment.

A case of attempt to murder has been filed against Pralin Baviskar by Nashik police. He is yet to be apprehended.
