Local trains are said to be the lifeline of Mumbai. Since many years, commuters travelling regularly in the same train everyday have formed their own small groups to bond with each other. One such group is '12.24 Borivli fast', which was formed more than eight years back.

Group of over 24 commuters in this group who travel every day in 12.24 pm local from Borivli to Churchgate are connected through WhatsApp. Besides meeting everyday in the local train, the group started meeting on Sundays too. Reason? Coming together and initiating a social activity.

Taking their family members along with them, the group members visit an old-age home, orphanage or a byre every weekend. Talking about the initiative, Rahul Bamb, member of the group, said: "This group is like a family.

Every member contributes according to their capacity. We don't take funds from other people. Once in six weeks we visit the old age home in Virar. While, twice a year we go to Ashagad village to meet the tribal people and look after their daily requirement. We are encouraging and helping them to be self-sustainable. Visiting byre is a regular weekend activity."

Besides this, the group also visits Vanvasi Kanya Ashram, home for tribal girls and Prem Sadan Children Home, home for orphan girls to name a few. While their visit, the members check the requirements of the people living in the organisation and arrange activities according to their necessities.

Four years ago, they started a WhatApp group for coordination through social media. Members of the group belong to various industries like diamond, electricity, chemicals, and computers, clothes to name a few. Through this initiative, the members provide medicines, basic food items, clothes, stationeries, infrastructure materials to the needy people.

Another member from the group, Mayur Lakhani (47), who is a resident of Kandivli, says that they have members of different age groups ranging from 18 to 80 years. Explaining about his experience, Lakani said: "Recently, we distributed clothes and other materials to one of the orphanage in Borivli. The smile we see on their face can never be replaced by money. The happiness on their face makes us feel satisfy and encourage us to do more such activities. We are also looking out to contribute and raise funds to build toilets for public."
