A large number of high scorers in the Class XII board exams has led to higher cut-offs for degree college admissions this year, too. Self- financed courses are in huge demand at most of the prominent colleges.Bachelor of Arts (BA) continued to be the favourite among students at colleges like St Xaviers college, Dhobi Talao and Jai Hind college and Ruia college where the cut-offs were higher than 90 per cent.

Bachelor in Commerce (BCom) along with its specialised courses like Accounting and Finance, Banking and Insurance, Finance management etc getting a large number of takers. A total of 3,31,912 students registered for various undergraduate courses at the 800-plus colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai. A total of 9,90,293 applications were received as several students had applied to more than one course.

Several students said that they could not make the cut to some of the top courses despite scoring well. "Despite scoring 91% I could not make it to Xaviers and Jai Hind for Arts as the cut offs were higher. I would have to wait for the second list now" said Shreyas Sanghvi a student from the city.
