Chief administrative officer (CAO) of Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) – a specialist cancer treatment, research and education facility in India – Dr Venkata VPRP abruptly resigned from his post last week. The TMC management has also accepted his resignation.

In an email response to a dna query, TMC senior PRO SH Jafri said, “CAO TMC has resigned for personal reasons and his resignation has been accepted by the competent authority.”

However, TMC sources narrated a completely different story with respect to Dr Venkata's sudden exit from the post he held since May 31, 2015.

Giving out details of what actually happened and why Dr Venkata left so abruptly, one of the sources said, “A complaint was filed against him by a fire safety contractor. This was investigated internally by the vigilance team that worked on laying the trap and gathering necessary evidence. After this, Dr Venkata was summoned to explain his stance and was also told that an inquiry would be set up to further probe the matter. However, Dr Venkata offered to resign instead and the matter got buried.”

When approached for further clarity in this matter, Jafri said after receiving dna query on the development, he checked with the TMC director and was told that Dr Venkata had tendered his resignation because he had got some other job.

Sources privy to the development also said that this entire issue has been dealt with very secretively by the higher-ups and hence, precise details about the CAO's exit have not been made public, fearing damage to TMC's brand and market reputation. In fact, what's intriguing about Dr Venkata's abrupt exit is the fact that his office has been sealed.

When this correspondent visited the CAO office to verify the information, he found it closed with a seal reading the door has been sealed on Thursday, April 21, 2016, at 17.25 hours and that it should be opened only in the presence of a competent authority.

The very fact that the CAO's office has been sealed is a clear indication that there is more to Dr Venkata's resignation than what meets the eye.
